Engineering Management at
Vienna University of Technology
“Top Education for Top Managers”

Up to now, conventional engineering education throughout Europe, which has been dominated by technical subjects, has had little to offer in interdisciplinary academic training. Topics relating to economics, business management and jurisprudence have been considered voluntary exercises rather than compulsory subjects. Vice versa, graduates from business schools, for example, have rarely had the chance to extend their knowledge in the technical sciences. However: In the near future there will be an increasing demand for top executives with specialized knowledge in technical subjects and in business administration, marketing and/or legal matters – in a nutshell, here will be a demand for Engineering Managers.
In order to meet the industry’s need for comprehensively trained executives, universities in the United States of America began to offer Engineering Management Programs. The number of students enrolling in these interdisciplinary programs has increased dramatically in the USA over the past few years.
This Engineering Management Executive Education Program is developed by VUT (Vienna University of Technology) in cooperation with OU (Oakland University, Rochester, Michigan).
It is tailor-made for Europe’s small and medium-sized enterprises facing a growing and increasingly competitive market. It is designed to prepare graduates from technical and economic universities for leadership roles in technical, corporate and national affairs. The program will also be especially valuable for individuals who have already started their management career. Successful completion of the Engineering Managemet Executive Education Program leads to a “Certificate in Engineering Management” from the Vienna University of Technology as well as from Oakland University. University graduates and some others can earn the Degree “Master of Science in Engineering Management” from Oakland University.
The presented modular and open program is an optimal combination between “High Tech” fields like CIM, IMS (Intelligent Manufacturing Systems), systems engineering, marketing, management topics, financing, international law, presentation techniques and the media.
Most of our participants started a new and successful career – when are you ready to join us?

Engineering Management at
Oakland University

Oakland University is a comprehensive, state assisted institution of approximately 15.000 students and a faculty of more than 395. The university was created in 1957 when the late Alfred G. and Matilda R. Wilson, donated their 1200 acre estate and 2 million dollars to Michigan State University to begin a new college in Oakland County/Michigan. From its beginnings, the university has emphasized academic quality, concentrating on providing its students with a broad liberal education by a dedicated faculty. Oakland University collaborates actively with business and industry to foster economic development of the region and the state.
Eight years ago, a Master of Science program in Engineering Management was created by the School of Engineering and Computer Science in cooperation with the School of Business Administration. The program has as its goal the provision of the tools and skills necessary for making sound management decisions in industry and business while strengthening one’s commitment to a specialized field of endeavor.
As of now, more than 450 students have been admitted into this program. Because of its balanced mixture of theory and practice as well as technical and management subjects, most of the candidates have positions of significant responsibilities in industry. The graduates will be providing leadership and improvements for industry especially in small and medium size companies.
Some years ago discussions started to transfer our program to Europe. In contrast to similar programs offered by other American universities abroad, we created a unique mixture of our engineering management curriculum with lectures from Europe. Thereby it should be possible to merge our experiences with the demands of European companies creating engineering managers with new profile. Austria, being in the center of Europe, was chosen for this program for its geopolitical and cultural situation.
